Karen Rodriguez said she is ready to take the field and be an impact player. Not bad for a political science major who is not a member of an athletic team.
Rodriguez is the newly-appointed ASO senator representing the School of Health Exercise, Science and Sports. She has twin goals, help SWC athletes to be successful and get more people out to see them. Step one, she said, is to plan out every week and make posters to promote games.
"I have to organize week by week," she said. "What games do we have? What games can the ASO be at? That's what I'm planning to do."
Athletes are invited to come talk to her about their team's needs, Rodriguez said, more SWC students should attend games. Taking part in athletic events is fun, she said, and the school can be more united through its sports teams.
"We're very pleased to have her," said Terry Davis, dean of the school.
"She's very knowledgeable."
Davis said there has not been a senator from the ASO representing his school and the Athletic Department for two years.
SWC football defensive end Randy Mitchell said he hopes Rodriguez is successful in her bid to increase attendance.
"To hear the crowd roar and cheer for you, it's a good feeling," he said.
