Every once in a while a new artistic trend occurs and the natural balance of creative process is stirred.
"Fotoaktion" is that new trend and professor of photography Perry Vasquez is making sure that Southwestern College is up to date.
This new art form does not follow any established rule. It consists of taking photographs that focus on the process of creating art rather than the final product.
No talent is required. Spontaneity is cherished and stimulated.
Leave the camera in the hands of an amateur and obtain surprising results. The audience suddenly becomes the artist.
Vasquez said that "Fotoaktion" brings people together and that it is important to teach.
"Fotoaktion" is an interactive photo happening in which people, the public, have the opportunity to take their own self-portrait," said Vasquez. "It creates a strong sense of confidence."
"Fotoaktion" was created by Vasquez's mentor Doris Berman in San Francisco. She got the idea to combine photography with a social event.
"(Berman) started all this to let the audience have control over their own image," said Vasquez. "I'm just continuing the experiment."
Vasquez decided to follow his mentor's footsteps by hosting various free events to promote "Fotoaktion" throughout San Diego. He has hosted events in museums, cafes and galleries.
The setup is simple. Vasquez only mounts a stage with a camera on top of a tripod. He provides participants with a long air release cable rested on the side, waiting for the opening to freeze time as the participants choose the right moment to snap that perfect shot.
Participants are encouraged to bring whatever they desire, whether it is a costume, masks or hats.
"By letting the public come together you force them to socialize," said Vasquez. "Getting an ingenious outcome."
During the events attendees can take part either by taking pictures or drawing.
"It is a good way to explore your unknown talents," said Gabriela Perez, 20, illustration drawing major. "I have the options to draw or take pictures and choose my own medium."
"Fotoaktion" is not currently taught at SWC, but Vasquez encourages his students to go to the events and experience this new wave.
Many have attended and left with a pleasant surprise.
"The dynamic that exists between the models, the individuals involved and the photographers who interact with them are very stimulating," said Enrique Soto, 20, graphic design major.
