'Faculty Four' are experienced professors

Students express bewilderment that professors pulled from classes mid-semester

Phil Lopez Photobucket - USC alumnus Phil Lopez started at Southwestern College as an adjuct who taught fundamentals of English grammar in 1973. He became a full-time professor in 1988. In the early 1990s Lopez became active in the faculty union and has served several terms as SCEA President. Lopez was SWC's first English teacher to be involved with the Puente Project, an academic program aimed at transferring Latino community college students to four-year universities. SWC's Puente Project has put more community college students through four-year universities than any other in the state of California, said Lopez.

Andrew Rempt Photobucket - Professor of English Andrew Rempt has been working at Southwestern College since 1992, the same year that he graduated from the University of California, Riverside. Rempt teaches critical thinking and composition, English literature and creative writing. Rempt co-founded the SWC Writing Center and continues to work there as a coordinator and an on-line tutor. Since 1997, Rempt has been interested in introducing computers into classrooms. He completed a training course that qualifies him to assist instructors with on-line components of their classrooms.

Dinorah Guadiana-Costa Photobucket - Professor of Spanish Dinorah Guadiana-Costa, co-author of the textbook "El espanol de hoy, cuaderno para natives," began her teaching career as a professor of language and literature at Southwestern College in 1991. Guadiana-Costa, a Tijuana native who is now a San Diego local, has been commuting between the two countries almost her entire life. She enjoys sharing her culture and teaching the Spanish language to speakers and non-speakers alike. "Entre mundos" is Guadiana-Costa's newest publication. A workbook she co-authored is used in nearly two dozen higher education institutions.

Janet Mazzarella Photobucket - Professor of Math, Science and Engineering Janet Mazzarella, a Chula Vista local and former SWC student, has maintained her roots in the South Bay community. Mazzarella began teaching in 1977 at Southwest High School and moved to Southwestern College in 1989 on a part-time basis and then permanently three years later. A professor in the School of Math, Science & Engineering, Mazzarella has taught classes in subjects such as Basic Math and Calculus for Business Majors. In her off time Mazzarella enjoys traveling and has reviewed textbooks for editors.
