Since community college students started receiving waves of rejection letters from San Diego State University in March, many questions have been raised concerning the university's new supplemental application.
Now an association that represents all community colleges in San Diego and Imperial Counties is looking into the matter.
The San Diego and Imperial County Community Colleges Association (SDICCCA) formed a task force to meet with SDSU representatives and discuss the supplemental application, according to Southwestern College Governing Board Member Yolanda Salcido.
SWC Transfer Director Norma Cazares said counselors across the county were blindsided by SDSU's supplemental application. She said it used the wrong general education template, which confused not only students, but counselors.
SDSU Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Ethan Singer said the supplemental transcript was changed at the request of community colleges and meant to be easier to fill out. He also said that SDSU would correct any errors.
Singer said SDSU had overturned nearly 100 denials and was assessing up to 200 applicants who had transfer guarantees.
SWC counselors have identified at least 60 SWC students who have a legitimate case for appeal, according to Cazares. Most of these students completed requirements for SDSU's Transfer Admission Guarantee, but will still have to wait until May for their appeals to be answered, said Cazares.
The SDICCCA task force will be co-chaired by SWC Governing Board President Jean Roesch.
