Meet the Staff

Diana Inocencio

Editor-In-Chief

Diana Inocencio is the current Editor-In-Chief of the Southwestern College Sun Newspaper. She joined the paper in the Spring of 2009, was the Photo Editor in the Fall and the following semester, Spring 2010, Diana became the Editor-In-Chief. Practicing photography for over 9 years, she has a great love for the visual arts and has developed an interest in various aspects of design.

John Carter

Managing Editor

John Carter was born in San Diego, CA. on August 30^th, 1984. He is the first in his family to attend college. Writing is his artistic medium and he uses it to express himself as a student-journalist. He has won multiple writing awards as a member of The Sun's staff. John plans to teach on the college level and write books. His favorite author is John Steinbeck, and he likes combat sports, and dislikes poor teamwork.

Albert Fulcher

Senior Staff Writer

Albert Fulcher is a journalism major in his third year with The SUN, Southwestern College. Fulcher has worked with the editorial board and currently is fulfilling the role of senior staff writer and assisting The SUN staff and editors. His column, The Human Chord received first place recognition from the Society of Professional Journalist Mark of Excellence Award, 2009, Region 11, pushing The Human Chord to the national competition of two-year collegiate newspaper column writing. Fulcher has received several awards from the Society of Professional Journalist, Society of Professional Journalist, San Diego Pro Chapter, San Diego Press Club, Journalism Association of Community Colleges, State Convention and SoCal Conference.Currently, he is taking classes at Southwestern, pursuing his B.A. degree in digital journalism at National University and working his way through higher education by freelancing with local news media.

Amber Sykes has been on the Sun News staff since 2009 and this is her first semester as News Editor. She is studying to become a public school librarian. She currently has two cats; she says she likes one, but not the other. As News Editor she would like to deliver to the community, fast and accurate news.

Serina Duarte

Campus Editor, Co-Manging Editor

Serina Duarte is a Journalism major and this semester she works as Managing Editor and Campus Editor. Her goals for this year is to balance the newspaper and her Fall classes and to be a good leader.

Eric Aquino

Arts Editor

Eric Aquino has a been a photographer, writer, and copy editor at the Sun for the past two semesters. Recently appointed Arts Editor, Mr. Aquino hopes to deliver accurate, informative and enjoyable articles concerning Southwestern College's exuberant art scene. When he is not writing for the Sun, Mr. Aquino also tutors college-level math and enjoys laying down sweet musical stylings on the piano.  Also, it is rumored that he once single-handedly saved a child from a rabid marsupial in Bathurst, Australia but this is yet to be confirmed.  Lastly, if Mr. Aquino had one wish, he would wish to live the rest of his life as a snorlax in the mountainous regions of Kanto.

Amanda Abad

Sports Editor, Production Manager, Business Manager

An Eastlake High School graduate, Amanda has been part of the Sun for six semesters. Having already earned an Associates in Journalism and General Studies, she is currently working on obtaining a bachelors in Journalism at Ashford University. She brings leadership, experience and discipline to the award winning newspaper.

Daniela Padilla

Photo Editor

Daniela Padilla has been a member of the Southwestern Sun since Fall 2009. Padilla is now the Photo Editor for the Sun. She covers mainly sports at Southwestern College but takes photos for  different sections of the Sun. Padilla is studying to become a photojournalist. 

Brittany Comas

Online Editor

Brittany Comas is currently one of the Online Editors of the Sun , and has been working at the paper for a few semesters. She has written in every section of the paper and moved into the online arena just last fall. Brittany is studying Journalism and plans on transferring to a 4 year university next year.

Joseph Young

Online Editor

Joseph Young has been working with the Sun since early 2009, first as a designer and now as one of the two Online Editors. He hopes to bring the Sun into the digital age by making sure the paper's web presence is timely and informative. Besides working at the Sun he also works as Web Editor of The Daily Aztec and as a Creative Director of an online magazine.

Alyssa Simental

Assistant Production Editor

Alyssa Simental, currently Assistant production manager and ASO beat reporter, former Arts editor and Senior staff writer. Alyssa has been with The Sun for four semesters starting this Fall 2010. Alyssa aspires to one day belong to the staff of Vogue magazine.
