Arizona is in a state of crisis. Employment is at 9.4 percent. There is an estimated $3 billion budget
gap next year. More kidnappings than days of the year occurred in 2009. Mix these devastating
statistics with 460,000 illegal immigrants and a heaping spoonful of federal neglect and you have
created a recipe for SB 1070.
It would be irresponsible to say illegal immigrants are the root cause of Arizona's woes, however, it
may be plausible to state that the presence of such a large body of illegal immigrants has exacerbated
many of the issues Arizona faces.
Over the last several years Arizona has passed a series of anti-immigration measures and repeatedly
pleaded with the federal government for assistance. After many years of silence and no solution in
sight, Arizona took matters into its own hands and crafted the "Support Our Law Enforcement and
Safe Neighborhoods" Act.
It is by far the state's toughest stance to date. And although the bill has been
the subject matter of contentious debate, a majority of Arizonans and Americans support the bill.
While no law is perfect and it is by no means a complete answer to the delicate issue of immigration,
here are several reasons why the nation-at-large supports the controversial bill.
